Captive Care Grants

The Captive Care and Breeding Committee is charged with acquiring and disseminating information on ethical and welfare issues and on new technology dealing with captive care and breeding of primates. We are responsible for announcing, receiving, and judging grant and award programs that are aligned with this office.

The IPS has produced international guidelines for the aquisition, care, and breeding of nonhuman primates - available here. (English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, and Thai versions available).

The Captive Care and Breeding Committee of IPS awards grants of up to $1500 for projects focusing on captive care issues that relate to: (1) Evaluating or improving the welfare status of primates in captivity (e.g., sanctuaries, private, commercial) in range countries, (2) obtaining information from local wildlife officials and field researchers on the welfare issues relating to captive primates living in range-country facilities, or (3) improving conditions for the well-being of captive primates in range countries.  Though the committee is interested in promoting the well-being of all captive primates regardless of where they live, these awards are specifically for those living in range countries.

Past awardees are eligible to apply in subsequent years but only if the project is different from that which was previously awarded.

Proposals are judged using the following criteria

  • Direct welfare implications – the number of animals that might benefit directly
  • Indirect welfare benefits – through education, training of staff/scientists, local conservation
  • Does the outcome take into account, and deal with, any potential welfare concerns?
  • Quality of project proposal (including the likelihood of successfully answering research question/s, if any)
  • Feasibility of implementation
  • Quality of the applicant
